There is Tolstoy or Margaret Mitchell, latterly Tom Wolfe who write stories of grand sweep and expanse covering huge areas of both geography and humankind. Novelists tend to write in one of two worlds. Helen Simonson is a direct descendant of Trollope and that is a statement deserving of elaboration. My favourite amongst the Victorians though is Anthony Trollope. And indeed I am a great admirer of his contemporary, William Makepeace Thackeray who could dissect society and its class distinctions with the skill of a neurosurgeon carving up the Christmas turkey. Of course Charles Dickens was utterly brilliant and deserves his status as a contender for the title of GOAT, novelist division.
